A gantry-type CNC cutting machine is a thermal cutting system built around a bridge-like structure-the gantry-that spans the width of the workpiece. The gantry travels along rails anchored to the floor or mounted on the bed, while the cutting torch moves across the gantry. The CNC controller manages motion, torch firing, gas flow, and height automatically.
The defining feature is the structure itself. Both ends of the beam are supported and driven simultaneously-bilateral drive keeps the gantry square to the bed.

Why choose a gantry? Because other designs have their limitations.
Portable cutters are small and easy to move, great for job sites or tight spaces. However, they aren't stable enough for long, straight cuts. You guide the torch by hand, or the machine rides on light rails that bend under pressure.
Cantilever machines have a torch arm supported on just one side. They're less expensive and use less floor space than gantries. But that unsupported arm bends from its own weight. On a 3-meter reach, this bend creates a tapered edge on your cuts.
Gantries, on the other hand, have a beam supported on both sides. This makes the structure really strong. The torch stays in a consistent position above the cutting bed. This steadiness leads to better cut quality – straighter lines, less taper, and fewer measurements needed afterward.
For thick plates, 25mm and up, gantries are the usual go-to. These heavier materials need more cutting power and stability. A cantilever system will bend, but a gantry won't.
Plus, gantries can handle more than one torch. A gantry can hold two, three, or even four torches across its beam. This means you can cut several parts at once from the same sheet, speeding up production for batches. Some setups can even accommodate up to 12 oxy-fuel torches.

What to Expect During Gantry Machine Installation
A gantry machine doesn't come as a single unit. Instead, it's delivered in parts and put together right where you'll be using it.
Before the machine arrives, you'll need to get the foundation ready. A regular industrial concrete floor won't cut it for gantry machines wider than 4 meters. You'll need a concrete slab with steel reinforcement, and it has to be perfectly level within specifications. This is where the rails will be secured. Then, the bed sections are placed, connected, and leveled along their entire length.
From the moment it's delivered until it's ready for its first cut, expect about 3 to 5 business days. The first couple of days focus on putting the mechanics together. Day three is for hooking up the electrical and gas lines. You'll then spend an additional one to two days on test cuts and fine-tuning the settings.
