What Is an Inverter Plasma Cutter?
An inverter plasma cutter is a power source that uses high-frequency switching-typically 20–50 kHz-to convert mains power into a stable DC output for the plasma arc. The "inverter" part refers to the power supply design: it rectifies AC to DC, switches it at high frequency through a compact transformer, then rectifies it again to produce the cutting current.
How an Inverter Actually Works
The inverter does three things differently from an old transformer unit.
First, the weight. The transformer in an old machine operates at 50 Hz. At that frequency, the magnetic core needs to be large to transfer enough power. An inverter switches at 20,000 Hz or higher. The transformer can be much smaller-about one-tenth the size. That's where the weight savings come from.
Second, the response time. An inverter can adjust its output in microseconds. When the arc conditions change-you hit a dirty spot on the plate, the torch height shifts, the input voltage dips-the inverter compensates almost instantly. A transformer unit reacts slowly. The difference shows up on the cut edge.
Third, the efficiency. An inverter runs at about 90-92% efficiency. A transformer unit is closer to 70-80%. That lost energy becomes heat. The inverter runs cooler, which means it lasts longer and doesn't heat up your shop.
What to Look for in a Plasma Cutter
When you're shopping for a plasma cutter, here's what actually matters:
Amperage – This determines thickness. 40-50A for sheet metal and auto work. 80-100A for general fabrication. 120A+ for plate work.
Duty cycle – If you cut more than 15 minutes per hour, get 100% duty cycle. The cost of inadequate duty cycle is downtime, not the machine price.
Arc ignition – Non-HF means no interference with electronics. If you have CNC or computers nearby, this is a requirement.
IGBT type – Dual-module IGBT lasts longer and runs more stable than single-tube designs. You won't see this on the spec sheet; you have to ask.
Air quality – The machine itself doesn't matter if your air is dirty. Budget for a refrigerated air dryer. It will pay for itself in consumable savings.
Support – Can you get consumables locally? Is there someone you can call when something goes wrong? This matters more than the machine price.

The inverter is smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient. A 50-amp inverter weighs about 20kg versus 50kg for a transformer unit. It also maintains more stable output during input voltage fluctuations-the arc doesn't drift as the machine heats up.

A 55-amp unit handles up to about 12mm steel with good quality. A 125-amp unit handles up to about 20-25mm. For thicker material, step up to higher amperage models.
In air plasma systems, a set of nozzle and electrode typically lasts 400 to 600 starts. The single biggest factor is air quality-clean, dry air can extend consumable life significantly. A refrigerated air dryer is the best investment you can make.
