Differences in Plasma Cutting for Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel & Aluminum
Plasma cutting melts metal with ionized high-temperature gas and removes molten material via gas flow. While the working principle is universal, cutting parameters must be adjusted for different metals to ensure stable results.
Plasma arcs power the cutting process. Compressed air or mixed gases pass through the torch nozzle and are heated by electric arcs into 20,000–30,000°C plasma. This high-temperature plasma melts metal, and fast gas flow clears molten material to form cutting seams.
Compressed air works well for carbon steel cutting, producing clean edges with little dross. Carbon steel also cuts faster than stainless steel and aluminum at the same thickness.
