What This Machine Does

A CNC metal plasma cutter is a computer-controlled thermal cutting system that uses an ionized gas jet to cut through electrically conductive metals. The machine generates an electrical arc between an electrode inside the torch and the workpiece. Compressed air flows through the torch, gets ionized by the arc into plasma, and reaches temperatures above 20,000°C. That superheated plasma jet melts the metal, and the high-velocity gas blows the molten material out of the cut path. The result is a fast, clean cut on carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and other conductive metals.

What makes this a CNC metal plasma cutter rather than just a plasma cutter is the computer control. The machine follows programmed cutting paths automatically, delivering repeatable accuracy within ±0.3mm inches across production runs. You load a CAD drawing, the software generates the tool path, and the machine does the rest.

Materials You Can Cut

Plasma only works on conductive metals. Here's what the machine handles:

Carbon Steel – The most common material. Cut with air or oxygen. Oxygen assist speeds up cutting through an exothermic reaction.

Stainless Steel – Cut with nitrogen or argon-hydrogen mixtures to prevent oxidation.

Aluminum – Also cut with nitrogen or argon-hydrogen. Aluminum conducts heat away quickly, so you need higher gas flow rates. Thickness capability is similar to stainless.

Other Metals – Copper, brass, cast iron, and titanium are all processable with the right gas and parameter settings.

What Goes Wrong and How to Fix It

Inconsistent cut quality

This usually comes down to worn consumables like the electrode and nozzle. Inspect them first – replace the electrode if the pit is too deep or the nozzle is no longer round.

01

Excessive dross on the bottom edge

Your cutting speed might be off, the gas pressure isn't right, or the nozzle is worn. Try adjusting the speed first. If that doesn't solve it, check the gas pressure and nozzle condition.

02

Arc won't start or is unstable

Look for a worn electrode, incorrect gas pressure, or moisture in your air supply. Check the electrode and gas pressure. If your compressed air is wet, you'll need an air dryer.

03

Nozzle damage

This usually happens if the torch hits the workpiece. A torch height controller should prevent this, but accidents occur. Check that your THC is working correctly and inspect the nozzle for physical damage.

04

Power supply overheating

You might be running it beyond its duty cycle. Let it cool down. Also, ensure the cooling fans are operational and the air intakes are clear.

Here's a quick rundown on getting your new machines set up

Assembly: These machines come in sections and will need to be put together on-site.

Foundation: A perfectly level floor is essential. Even small dips on a large surface can really mess with cutting precision. Most machines need a concrete floor that meets specific flatness requirements. You'll get foundation blueprints from the manufacturer, so make sure to follow them closely.

Power: A typical 100A system runs on 380V three-phase power and uses around 30–40 amps. Bigger machines will use more. It's a good idea to check your electrical setup before the machine even gets there.

Gas Supply: You'll definitely need compressed air. For optimal results with certain materials, you'll also want oxygen (for carbon steel) and nitrogen (for stainless steel and aluminum). It's crucial that your gas is clean and dry. Any moisture in the lines can damage the optics and cause the consumables to wear out faster.

Timeline: Budget about 3–5 business days from when the machine is delivered until it's ready for its first cut, covering installation and testing.

Common Problem

Can a CNC metal plasma cutter cut stainless steel and aluminum as well as carbon steel?

Yes. Stainless steel and aluminum are both conductive and cut well with plasma. The main difference is gas selection-nitrogen or argon-hydrogen mixtures work better than air for these materials. Thickness capability is typically about 15–25% lower than carbon steel with the same power.

Can the machine cut materials with rust or paint on the surface?

Yes. Plasma is more forgiving of surface contaminants than laser. Rust and paint will affect cut quality somewhat but won't damage the torch. For best results, clean the material surface before cutting. For heavily rusted materials, you may need to adjust cutting parameters.

How long does it take to change between different material thicknesses?

Parameter changes take 2–5 minutes via the control interface. The machine stores parameter sets for different materials and thicknesses, so you can recall settings quickly. Full changeover including consumable changes and test cutting typically takes 15–20 minutes.

Does the machine require a special foundation?

Yes. The machine must be installed on a level concrete floor. Foundation requirements depend on table size and machine weight. We provide foundation drawings before shipment. The foundation must cure for 7–10 days before the machine can be bolted down.
