Product brief introduction
A water cooled laser welder is a laser welding system that uses a closed-loop water circulation system to remove heat from the laser source and welding head during operation. The laser generates a beam at 1080nm wavelength, delivered through an optical fiber cable to a handheld or automated welding head. The beam is focused to a spot size typically ranging from 0.2mm to 2.0mm, producing power density sufficient to melt metal at the joint interface.
The water cooled laser welder is distinguished from air-cooled systems by its ability to maintain stable operation at higher power levels (1500W and above) and under continuous-duty conditions. The cooling system typically consists of a chiller unit, water pump, radiator, and temperature controller. Water temperature is maintained at 20–25°C with ±1°C precision. For systems operating at 2000W and above, water cooling is effectively required rather than optional.
Cooling System Architecture
The water cooling loop follows a closed-cycle design. Deionized water is circulated by a pump through the laser source, optics, and welding head. Heat generated by the laser diodes and optical components is transferred to the water, which then passes through a chiller unit where heat is exchanged to the ambient air via a radiator and fan system.
Chiller Unit – The chiller maintains water temperature at a set point, typically 25±1°C. Chiller power consumption scales with laser power-a 2000W system typically requires a chiller with approximately 4–5kW cooling capacity. The chiller includes a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator.
Water Quality Requirements – Deionized water with conductivity below 5μS/cm is required to prevent scale buildup and electrochemical corrosion in the cooling passages. Tap water contains minerals that deposit on internal surfaces over time, reducing cooling efficiency and potentially blocking narrow passages. Coolant replacement intervals are typically 6–12 months depending on usage.
Temperature Control Precision – Water-cooled systems regulate temperature within ±1°C, compared to ±5°C or wider for air-cooled systems. This precision is critical for maintaining consistent focus stability and weld penetration depth across long production runs.
Applications
Automotive Manufacturing – Welding of body parts, battery trays, and structural components in stainless steel and aluminum-. The high duty cycle supports production-line environments.
New Energy and Battery Industry – Precision welding of lithium battery casings, battery tabs, and electric vehicle battery pack components-. Temperature stability is critical for consistent penetration on thin battery materials.
Sheet Metal Processing – Welding stainless steel enclosures, cabinets, and structural components-. The clean weld appearance reduces finishing requirements.
Kitchenware and Home Appliances – Welding of kitchen equipment, bathroom hardware, and appliance components-. Aesthetic weld quality is important in visible applications.
Aerospace – Precision welding of thin-gauge components where heat input must be tightly controlled-.

Everything You Need to Know
How does a water cooled laser welder compare to TIG welding?
Laser welding is 3–5 times faster than TIG on comparable materials. Heat input is significantly lower-minimal distortion on thin materials. Post-weld grinding is often eliminated. TIG remains better for very thick sections (over 12mm) and applications requiring specific filler metal control. The two technologies complement each other.
What is the typical water consumption of a water cooled laser welder?
The system is closed-loop-water is recirculated, not consumed. Evaporation loss is minimal. The chiller uses approximately 4–5kW of electricity for a 2000W system. Water is only replaced during scheduled maintenance (every 6–12 months).
Can a water cooled laser welder be used outdoors?
Not recommended. The chiller requires stable ambient conditions and protection from dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Water lines can freeze in cold weather if the system is not drained or maintained with antifreeze. For outdoor or mobile applications, air-cooled systems are more suitable.
What is the expected service life of the water pump?
Water pump life depends on duty cycle and water quality. With proper maintenance (clean water, no debris, regular filter changes), pumps typically last 3–5 years in continuous production. Signs of pump failure include unusual noise, low flow rate, and fluctuating pressure.
