This compact CNC portable cutter solves the space problem while still handling real production work. It's a numerically controlled cutting system that uses oxy-fuel or plasma to cut steel plate, but the whole package fits into a footprint about the size of a pallet. Running on 220V single-phase power, it handles mild steel up to 100mm with oxy-fuel, or up to 25mm with plasma, giving you CNC precision without the space demands of a stationary gantry.

 

The Space-Saving Design Philosophy

Most portable cutters are still bulky. The manufacturers take a stationary design, bolt some casters on it, and call it portable. We started with portability as the primary requirement and built everything else around that.

The gantry frame is welded steel, but we kept the cross-section optimized for rigidity without excess weight. The rail system is shorter than typical – just enough travel to handle most plate sizes you'll encounter in mobile work. The control box mounts directly to the gantry, eliminating a separate cabinet that takes up floor space.

The trade-off is capacity. You're not cutting 4x8 sheets on this machine – the travel is limited to what fits on the rail system. But the compact size means you can cut plates that other portable systems can't reach because they're too big to fit through a standard doorway. The Rails and Why We Made Them Shorter

This comes down to an engineering decision. Longer rails mean more cutting capacity but also more weight, more shipping volume, and more setup complexity. We looked at what our customers actually cut on portable systems and found that 80% of their work fits within a 1.5-meter cutting length.

The rail system uses hardened steel guides, same as our larger machines. The bearing carriages are pre-loaded to eliminate play. The rack is cut from solid steel, not formed. The shorter length means we can use heavier cross-section rails without making the machine too heavy to handle.

What you get is a machine that's easy to move, easy to set up, and accurate where it needs to be. What you give up is the ability to cut full sheets in one pass. For most portable applications, that's a reasonable trade.

Stainless steel – Plasma only, up to 20mm. The compact frame handles the weight and motion requirements, and the plasma torch produces clean edges.

 

 

Aluminum – Plasma cutting up to 20mm. The reflective properties of aluminum don't affect plasma like they do laser, so it's a straightforward application.

 

 

Cast iron – Oxy-fuel works well on cast iron, though the cut quality is slightly rougher than rolled steel. The preheat needs to be longer to bring the material to ignition temperature.
