A CNC fiber laser cutting machine uses computer numerical control to automate the movement of the cutting head, the delivery of the laser, and the flow of assist gas. The CNC reads the CAD file, converts it into tool paths, and executes the cut without manual intervention. The operator's job is to load the sheet, select the program, and unload the finished parts.
The "CNC" part is what separates this from a manual or semi-automatic system. The machine does not require the operator to guide the torch, adjust the height, or compensate for material variations. The controller handles all of that. The operator loads the material, the machine does the work.

What Does the CNC Control Actually Do?
The CNC controller manages four things during the cutting process.
Motion control – The controller moves the gantry along the X and Y axes and the cutting head along the Z axis. It coordinates the speed and acceleration of each axis to maintain the programmed path. The path accuracy depends on the servo drives and the feedback loop. The controller reads the position from encoders and adjusts the drives continuously.
Laser parameters – The controller sets the laser power, pulse frequency, and duty cycle based on the material and thickness. The cutting parameters are stored in the machine's memory. When the operator selects a material and thickness, the controller loads the correct parameters automatically.
Gas control – The controller manages the assist gas pressure and type. Oxygen for steel, nitrogen for stainless and aluminum. The pressure is adjusted based on the material and the cutting speed. The controller opens and closes the gas valves at the correct points in the cutting cycle.
Height control – The controller monitors the torch height and adjusts the Z axis to maintain a consistent distance from the workpiece. The system uses a capacitive sensor to measure the distance and a feedback loop to correct any deviation.
The Relationship Between CNC and Machine Construction
The CNC control is only as good as the machine it is controlling. A high-quality CNC cannot compensate for a poorly built machine.
The frame – The CNC can command accurate movement, but if the frame flexes or vibrates, the cutting head will not be where the controller expects it to be. We stress-relieve the welded frame to prevent warping. The frame holds the rails in place. If the frame moves, the accuracy moves with it.
The drives – The CNC commands the servo drives to move the gantry. The drives respond to the CNC commands. The gantry follows. If the drives are underpowered or the mechanical components are poorly aligned, the CNC cannot produce accurate cuts.
The linear rails – The gantry rides on linear rails. The CNC controls the movement along the rails. The parallelism and straightness of the rails affect the accuracy. We machine the rail mounting surfaces after stress relief to ensure parallelism.
