A compact, computer-controlled gantry CNC plasma cutter is perfect for workshops needing precise plasma cutting without a large footprint. This system is built on a lightweight beam structure, making it portable within a shop. You simply load a design, and the machine uses plasma to cut along the path. The 'mini' and 'light' aspects mean it's mobile, budget-friendly for smaller fabrication businesses, and accurate enough for most structural and sheet metal jobs.
It can cut mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum up to roughly 35mm with plasma. An optional flame cutting mode is available for thicker plates, up to 200mm. For most fabrication shops focused on structural steel, equipment repair, or custom metalwork, this machine meets most daily cutting requirements.

The material logic: why the frame is built this way
The gantry beam is made from structural steel, welded, and then stress-relieved. While stress relief isn't visible in pictures, it's crucial for maintaining the machine's accuracy over time. Without this process, residual stresses from welding would slowly cause the beam to misalign as the machine heats up and cools down during use. This is especially vital for lighter mini gantry designs, as their reduced mass offers less resistance to structural distortion.
The rails use rack-and-pinion drive with hardened steel racks. Soft racks wear unevenly-the teeth develop flat spots or inconsistent profiles over time, and that shows up as positioning errors. On a machine with ±0.5mm positioning tolerance, that's the difference between parts that fit together and parts that need grinding. Hardened racks hold their profile longer, which means the machine stays within spec.
With motors on both sides of the gantry, the bilateral drive system ensures the beam stays perfectly aligned with the rails as the machine speeds up or slows down. While a single-side drive might suffice for a mini machine with a short beam, you'll notice a clear difference on wider cuts across the entire table – your parts will come out straight and uniform.
Bilateral drive for stable cuts. Motors on both sides of the gantry work in sync, preventing the beam from twisting during movement. On longer traverses, this means you get square cuts without the slight taper that single-side drive can introduce
Automatic torch height control. The system monitors arc voltage and adjusts torch height to compensate for plate surface variations-warpage, mill scale, minor unevenness. Without this, you'd be manually adjusting height between cuts, and inconsistent standoff distance directly affects cut quality
Built-in shape library. The control system stores common shapes-circles, squares, slots, flanges, and structural profiles. For routine parts, you enter dimensions and cut; no CAD file needed. One supplier lists up to 54 built-in shapes, covering most standard fabrication needs
Nesting software included. The software takes DXF drawings and arranges parts on the plate to minimise scrap. On steel plate where material cost is significant, a 5–8% improvement in utilisation adds up fast
A real-world example: what a shop actually saved
A small fabrication shop building conveyor components for the mining industry was cutting gussets and brackets with a portable magnetic drill and hand torch. Layout took 15 minutes per plate; cutting and cleanup added another 20. They moved to this mini gantry machine. Layout time disappeared-the nesting software handled it. Cutting time dropped to 8 minutes per plate. More importantly, parts were consistent. One operator went from cutting 6 plates per shift to 18, with fewer reworks. The material saving from nesting alone paid for a significant portion of the machine within about 18 months of part-time use.
What's the difference between a mini light gantry and a full-size industrial gantry cutter?
The main differences are weight, footprint, and price. A mini gantry machine is lighter, more portable, takes up less floor space, and costs significantly less. The trade-off is reduced rigidity, slightly lower accuracy (±0.5mm vs ±0.2mm), and slower cutting speed on heavy plate. For most fabrication shops, the mini is sufficient.
Can this machine cut stainless steel and aluminium, or is it only for mild steel?
It cuts all three-mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium-with plasma. Cut quality on stainless and aluminium is generally good, though the dross (re-solidified metal along the cut edge) tends to be harder than on mild steel and requires more cleanup. If stainless or aluminium is your primary material, consider a machine with a more powerful plasma source.
What power supply do I need to run this?
The control system runs on single-phase 220V, but the plasma power source typically requires 380V three-phase with adequate amperage for the power rating. Most industrial workshops have this available. If your shop only has single-phase, you'll need a phase converter or consider a smaller plasma source.
