product presentation
A heavy-duty gantry metal cutting machine is a different category of equipment entirely. The gantry spans 3 to 6 meters wide, with cutting lengths up to 20 meters or more. The frame is welded from structural steel and stress-relieved through heat treatment-heated to about 600°C and cooled slowly over 24 hours. Without this step, the frame warps. On a 6-meter bed, even a fraction of a millimeter of warp translates to cut errors that show up as parts that don't fit.

What I See in Shops
When I walk into a shop that runs a heavy-duty gantry, I notice a few things. The floor is cleaner-no metal shavings everywhere. The parts fit together. The weld joints are tight. The operator isn't grinding edges before welding.
When I walk into a shop still using portable or cantilever machines on heavy plate, I see the opposite. Bent-over operators. Grinding dust everywhere. Rework piles. The operator spends about 20% of their time cutting and the rest fixing what the cut did wrong.
The gantry design exists because other designs have limits. A portable machine moves on lightweight rails that flex under load-. A cantilever machine has the torch arm supported from one side-the unsupported end deflects under its own weight. A gantry has the beam supported on both sides. The torch position is fixed relative to the bed. This consistency translates to cut quality-straighter cuts, less taper, fewer dimensions to check after cutting.
The structural engineering behind a well-built gantry is what makes it work. Some heavy-duty gantries can be equipped with up to four standard plasma torches, two DMX bevel systems, and twelve oxyfuel torches-all on the same beam-. This allows cutting multiple parts simultaneously from the same sheet, reducing cycle time for batch production.
The Installation Reality That No One Prepares For
A heavy-duty gantry doesn't arrive in one piece. It arrives in sections-typically 4-meter or 6-meter modules-and is assembled on-site.
The foundation must be prepared before delivery. A standard concrete floor may not be sufficient. Some configurations require a 12-inch (300mm) concrete foundation to ensure accurate geometry-. The load-bearing requirement is not less than 10 tons per square meter-. The foundation must be level within ±0.5 inches and made of reinforced concrete-.
Cut quality may be influenced by vibration from equipment in adjacent areas such as punch presses or forklift traffic-. The cutting machine should be isolated either with a separate floor pad or vibration dampeners.
The power requirement is substantial. A 300-amp plasma system draws about 80-100 amps at 380V three-phase at full output. Most shops don't have that capacity available. Upgrading the electrical service adds $5,000-15,000 depending on local rates.
From delivery to first production cut: about 3 to 5 working days. The first two days are spent on mechanical installation. The third day covers electrical and gas connections. The remaining one to two days are spent on test cutting and parameter tuning.

Common Problem
What's the real cost difference between plasma and oxy-fuel on thick plate?
On 50mm carbon steel, plasma consumables cost about 4-5 times more per hour than oxy-fuel tips. But plasma cuts 3-5 times faster. The breakeven point is typically around 75mm. Below that, plasma is usually cheaper per part. Above that, oxy-fuel wins on cost.
How do I extend consumable life on thick plate?
Three things: use the correct amperage for the material thickness (don't run 300 amps on 20mm plate), maintain consistent gas pressure (drops of 10% affect consumable life), and pierce at the correct height (too low causes back-splatter that damages the nozzle). A refrigerated air dryer is essential.
What's the advantage of bilateral drive on a heavy-duty gantry?
Bilateral drive means motors on both sides of the gantry move it simultaneously, keeping the gantry square to the bed. On a wide gantry, single-side drive causes the trailing side to lag, which shows up as cut errors across the plate. Bilateral drive is standard on well-built heavy-duty gantries.
What maintenance does the machine require?
Daily torch and guide rail checks. Weekly drive system cleaning and lubrication. Monthly inspections of guide rails, drive gears, and electrical connections. Gas quality is the most common source of problems-use clean, dry air and check air filters regularly.
