Most people look at "3015" and see a random number. It's not.

3015 refers to the machine's working area: 3,000mm on the X axis and 1,500mm on the Y axis-. That's a full sheet of standard plate. It's the most common format in sheet metal fabrication because it covers the majority of parts that come through a typical shop door. Anything bigger than 3×1.5m is oversized for most work. Anything smaller wastes floor space on a larger machine.

What makes a 3015 compact fiber laser cutting machine different from a standard 3015 isn't the working area. It's the overall footprint-. The laser source is integrated into the machine body, not sitting in a separate cabinet. The layout is tighter. The machine occupies about 30% less floor space than a conventional 3015-. For a shop where every square meter counts, that's the difference between fitting a laser and not fitting one.

Carbon steel is a breeze. It absorbs the laser energy readily, resulting in clean cuts. Using oxygen as an assist gas even speeds things up due to an exothermic reaction that adds heat. The edge is usually smooth enough for most structural needs without needing a grind.

Stainless steel reflects some of the laser's beam. To prevent oxidation on the edge, the correct assist gas is crucial. Nitrogen provides a clean, bright edge. While it's pricier than compressed air, it's essential for food-grade or marine applications.

Aluminum can be challenging because it dissipates heat quickly. The laser's energy spreads out before a full cut is made. This means you need to cut it 30-50% faster than steel of the same thickness. Cutting too slowly leads to rough edges and dross buildup.

Galvanized steel is common in sheet metal projects. The zinc vaporizes, producing fumes. This usually doesn't harm the cut quality, but it's important to have good fume extraction and keep the lens clean.

My best tip: choose the laser power based on the material you cut most frequently, rather than the thickest material you might cut only occasionally.

Operating a compact 3015 is fundamentally the same as a standard machine, only it occupies less space. The operator's responsibilities include loading material, selecting the correct program, and monitoring the process while the CNC manages the cutting. The machine itself stores optimal cutting parameters for different materials and thicknesses. When the operator selects the material, the machine automatically adjusts power, speed, and gas pressure. This automation slashes setup time from 15 minutes down to a mere 30 seconds.

Operators generally become proficient within one to two weeks. An engineering degree isn't required; instead, operators need a deep understanding of the material itself – knowing how to identify changes in edge quality and which specific parameter to adjust accordingly.
