What "Ultra Large" Actually Changes

I've spent enough time around fabrication shops to know that most people think "ultra large" means a bigger cutting table. It doesn't. It means a different way of working entirely.
An ultra large fiber laser cutting machine is a CNC system built for plates that standard machines can't handle in one pass - typically 6 meters long and 2.5 meters wide and up. Standard machines stop at 3,000×1,500mm. Ultra large machines start there and go up to 26,000×3,500mm or more. Working lengths range from 12 meters to 26 meters, with modular configurations that can extend further. Power ranges from 12kW up to 30kW.
What Standard Machines Get Wrong
The issue isn't speed. It's workflow.
A standard 3×1.5m machine processes a 12-meter plate in sections. Cut 3 meters, reposition, cut 3 meters, reposition again. Each reposition takes 5 to 10 minutes. The accumulated error from repositioning can exceed 1mm - enough to require rework or scrapping parts.
An ultra large machine eliminates repositioning entirely. The operator loads the plate once, aligns it once, and runs the program. The machine cuts the entire plate in one pass. No alignment errors. No rework from accumulated tolerance drift.
The time savings are significant. On a 12-meter plate, a standard machine takes about 47 minutes - 32 minutes of cutting and 15 minutes of repositioning. An ultra large machine takes 32 minutes. Over 20 plates per shift, that's 5 hours of saved time.

What They Don't Tell You About Machine Installation
Big machines don't just show up ready to go. They come in pieces and get put together right where you'll use them.
The foundation is key. A basic concrete floor won't cut it. You need a strong, reinforced concrete slab that's perfectly level. It needs to handle at least 5kN/m² of weight. Depending on the setup, you might need a slab at least 15cm thick, capable of supporting 500kg/m².
Power needs are serious. A 40kW laser uses way more power than a 12kW one. Beefing up your electrical service will cost you extra.
Gas hookups matter a lot. Your gas needs to be super clean and dry. Any moisture in the lines can wreck the optics. Lots of installations get held up because the gas supply wasn't ready.
Getting from delivery to making your first cut usually takes about 5 to 7 business days. You'll need at least 10m x 5m of floor space, plus an extra 3m around it for moving materials.
