Material Quality: The Uncontrollable Factor

Even with top-notch machines, material quality significantly impacts results. We've had customers report their machines were failing, only to find the issue was a change in steel composition from a different supplier. Identical settings and thickness didn't account for a subtle 0.05% variation in carbon content, which affects laser cutting. If your cut quality suddenly drops, try adjusting the feed rate by 5-10% first. This often fixes the problem before you need to tweak power or gas settings.

Surface condition also matters. Rust, mill scale, and oil all affect how the laser beam is absorbed. We've seen shops with the same machines get very different results because one had steel exposed to weather longer than the other. Clean material cuts consistently; dirty material doesn't.

Finally, material flatness is key. Your sheet's height sensor can handle minor bends, but severe bowing can cause nozzle crashes or unstable focus. We've seen operators blame their equipment when the real problem was poor material storage.
