When Standard Size Means Compromise

 

A standard 3-meter laser cutter works well for most sheet metal jobs. But when your plate is 12 meters long, you have two choices: cut in sections and hope the alignment errors don't add up, or get a machine that matches the size of your material.

An oversize fiber laser cutter solves that problem. The working area starts where standard machines stop - 6 meters, 12 meters, 14 meters. Some configurations support widths up to 3.2 meters, with cutting lengths up to 14 meters or longer. The machine cuts the entire plate in one pass. No repositioning. No alignment errors. No rework.

Why Plasma Users Are Switching

 

Plasma has been the standard for thick plate for decades. It's about to be replaced.

Cutting speed: plasma does 50mm plate at 220-250 mm/min. A 30kW fiber laser does 650 mm/min. Nearly three times faster.

Edge quality: plasma leaves a rough edge that needs grinding. Grinding adds 15-25% to labor time. Laser leaves a clean edge. No grinding.

The Underrated Feature: Bevel Cutting

 

 

Bevel cutting is often overlooked, but it's a real game-changer. Normally, you'd cut a plate flat and then move it to another machine for beveling. This means an extra machine, an extra operator, and an extra setup.

But with bevel cutting, the plate is ready for welding right after it comes off the machine. It cuts the bevel in the same pass. You can achieve K, V, Y, U, and X-type bevels up to 45 degrees.

Consider shipbuilding: roughly 70% of structural parts require beveled edges. Completing this in a single pass can boost efficiency for those parts by 50-80%.

1. What's the longest working length available?

Configurations go up to 30 meters or longer, expandable in 4-meter increments. Table widths range from 3 to 5 meters.

2. Can it cut smaller plates?

Yes. The machine cuts any plate that fits on the bed. Smaller plates are processed the same way as on a standard machine.

3. How does it stay accurate over long distances?

The bed is modular. Each section is independent and stress-relieved. Thermal expansion doesn't transfer. The gantry uses bilateral drive to stay square.

4. What's the biggest installation challenge?

Foundation preparation. The machine requires a level floor with adequate load-bearing capacity. A deviation of even a few millimeters translates to cut errors.

5. What does bevel cutting save?
