When the Standard Bed Isn't Enough

A 3×1.5m bed is usually fine for sheet metal tasks, but not all shops work with standard-sized sheets.

If you're dealing with material that's 6 meters long, or even 12 or 20 meters, a standard machine can be a hassle. You'd have to cut 3 meters, then reposition, then cut another 3 meters, and so on. Each repositioning takes about 5 to 10 minutes and can lead to alignment mistakes. By the time you're finished with a 12 meter plate, the combined errors might be over 1mm, causing parts to not fit and requiring rework.

A long-bed fiber laser cutter solves this completely. Its bed is designed to fit your plate length, meaning no repositioning, no alignment errors, and no need for rework.

Understanding 'Long Bed'

When we talk about a 'long bed,' we're referring to the machine's working envelope, which usually means a cutting length of 6 meters or more. Standard long bed models start at 12 meters and can be extended to 36 meters or beyond. If you have a modular design, it can be expanded by 2 or 3 meter increments. The table itself typically measures between 3 and 5 meters in width.

The bed's modular nature, built in sections, isn't just for easier workshop placement. It's primarily for managing heat. Since each section is independent, heat generated during cutting doesn't transfer between them, which keeps the machine precise even at its full length.

Precisely identify the problem

An operator cuts 3 meters, then repositions the plate. This shift causes the reference point to be lost. When the operator realigns it, it's never perfectly accurate. A small error of 0.5mm might occur here, and another 0.5mm there. After the fourth reposition, the total error can exceed 1mm.

This 1mm discrepancy becomes apparent at the welding station, leading to parts not lining up correctly. The welder then has to spend time grinding, making the job take longer than it ought to.

However, a long bed machine completely bypasses these problems. The plate is loaded only once, and the operator aligns it just one time. The machine then cuts the entire plate in a single pass, avoiding any cumulative error and eliminating the need for rework.

Uses for Long Bed Machines

Truck Chassis and Frames: Ideal for cutting C-channels, long frame members, and bus body frames, especially when dealing with parts typically 6-12 meters long.

Shipbuilding: Perfect for cutting hull plates and structural components, with some setups accommodating plates up to 36 meters.

Bridge and Structural Steel: Designed for processing large components that exceed the capacity of standard machines for a single pass.

Railway Components: Used for creating long structural frameworks for railcars and rolling stock.

Steel Service Centers: Efficient for processing customer plates by running batches of parts and cutting multiple shapes from each sheet.

FAQ

01/

How long can the bed actually be?

Standard configurations go up to12 meters , with modular designs allowing further customization. Some machines support bed lengths from 12 meters to 24 meters in 3-meter increments, and widths from 3 meters to 5 meters.

02/

What's the advantage of a modular bed over a single-piece bed?

Thermal management. Each section is independent, so heat from cutting doesn't transfer from one section to another. The machine stays accurate across the full length. A single-piece bed would warp over time from heat accumulation.

03/

Can the bed be expanded after installation?

Yes. The modular design allows for expansion. You can start with a shorter bed and add sections as your production grows. The machine grows with you.

04/

What industries use long bed laser cutters?

Truck chassis and frame manufacturing, shipbuilding, bridge construction, railway components, steel service centers, and any shop processing long plates.
