Product details

If you regularly cut plates 20mm thick or more, standard laser cutters usually won't cut it. They're not built for such tough jobs. Our Heavy Rail Fiber Laser Cutting Machine provides a sturdy option. It attaches the guide rails straight to the shop floor, not the machine bed. The gantry travels on these heavy-duty ground rails, while the worktable stays separate. This clever setup means that putting a 30-ton steel plate on the table won't shift the rails or warp the bed. These machines can handle cutting lengths of 20, 30, or 40 meters, and widths up to 4 or 5 meters. Paired with a strong laser source, like 20kW, 40kW, or 60kW and up, it slices through thick carbon steel and structural parts much faster and more accurately than plasma or flame cutting.

Difference

A light rail setup has rails built directly into the machine's bed, creating a single piece. This works well for smaller sheets, typically under 2.5 meters wide and 6 meters long. For larger sizes, though, the bed gets too heavy and expensive to machine, making it impractical. Problems like heat distortion from welding, incomplete stress relief leading to warping, and high shipping costs also become major concerns.

With a heavy rail system, the rails are separate from the worktable and sit on their own foundations. The gantry travels on these independent rails, while the table is its own unit. This setup has advantages: the table can be made almost any length (12m, 20m, 30m, or even longer), heavy loads on the table don't stress the rail system, and you can extend the cutting length just by adding more rail sections and table modules instead of replacing the whole machine.

What Goes Into the Machine Determines Its Output

The quality of your machine's cuts directly reflects the quality of its construction. Here's where we excel, and why you should pay close attention when choosing a supplier.

Bed Frame:
Our heavy rail beds are crafted from high-strength structural steel, welded with full penetration. After welding, the entire assembly undergoes stress-relief annealing in a furnace – a crucial step. Skipping this can lead to warping from residual welding stresses within the first year, causing accuracy issues that require a full bed replacement. Following heat treatment, we machine all rail mounting surfaces in one setup on a large gantry mill, ensuring genuine flatness and parallelism.

Beam:
The beam supports the cutting head across its width. It needs to be both lightweight for quick acceleration and rigid enough to withstand cutting forces. We use integrated hollow aluminum beams. The extrusion process incorporates internal ribbing for strength without the heft of steel. Aluminum, being about a third the density of steel, offers a superior stiffness-to-weight ratio when designed correctly. A lighter beam means smaller motors, less wear on the drive system, and better overall machine performance throughout its lifespan.

Guide Rails and Racks:
This is where the durability of a machine truly shows. We select precision-ground guide rails from Hiwin and hardened, ground rack-and-pinion systems. Our pinions are ground after hardening for optimal tooth profiles and surface finish. We've encountered machines with rolled rails, which wore out significantly within two years, forcing costly replacements of the entire rail system – a situation that can cost nearly half the machine's original price. This is a preventable disaster.

The Z-Axis:
We opt for a rack-and-pinion Z-axis over ball screws. While ball screws are precise, they are vulnerable to shock loads. In demanding cutting environments, a head collision is inevitable. A rack-and-pinion Z-axis handles impacts better, resists cutting debris, and offers greater longevity compared to a ball screw.

Key points on maintenance and consumables

01/

Rail Lubrication: This is a common area where operators falter. Given the length of rails and numerous lubrication points, we recommend manual lubrication before each shift if you don't have an automatic system. With auto-lube, check the lines weekly. Dry rails wear rapidly, and replacing them on a 30-meter machine is costly.

02/

Laser Optics: Protective windows and focus lenses are consumable items. Cutting dust and metal vapor accumulate on optics, reducing transmission and cutting quality. If ignored, thermal stress can crack the lens. We advise checking optics every two weeks and cleaning with proper lens paper and isopropyl alcohol, avoiding cloth or paper towels.

03/

Rack Backlash: Clearance naturally develops between gear and rack teeth. While normal, failing to adjust it will cause positioning accuracy to drift. We set pinion preload during commissioning and demonstrate to your operators how to check and adjust backlash. It's a 20-minute job, and performing it monthly maintains your accuracy.

04/

Cooling System: Both the laser source and cutting head require water cooling. Follow the coolant change schedule in your manual and check filters. Chiller failure leading to laser overheating can result in substantial repair costs. Use deionized water, not tap water, for the best results.

FAQ

1.What's the difference between a heavy rail laser and a standard gantry laser?

The rails on a heavy rail machine are anchored to the shop floor, separate from the worktable. On a standard gantry, the rails are mounted on the bed itself. This means a heavy rail machine can handle much longer plates (20m to 40m+), and heavy plate loading doesn't stress the rail system. Standard gantries are fine for sheets up to about 6m long; beyond that, you need a heavy rail system.

2.Do you offer customization? What can I customize?

Yes-cutting width, length, laser power, and bevel capabilities are all customizable. We recommend you send us typical part drawings and production volume estimates. Our engineers will look at your application and suggest a configuration that matches your needs-not the most expensive one, the one that makes sense for your operation.

3. How long does installation take?

Plan on 7–10 working days from machine arrival to full commissioning. Before we arrive, you'll need a flat foundation (we provide drawings), three-phase 380V power, compressed air piping, and a cooling water system. Foundation curing time matters-concrete needs at least 7–10 days of curing before you can bolt down the rails.

4. What's the warranty and after-sales support?

One-year warranty on the full machine, two years on the laser source. We provide 24/7 remote video support. If something goes wrong, we first try to diagnose via video. If parts are needed, we ship them and guide your team through replacement remotely. If the machine needs to come back to the factory, we follow a standard repair process with clear communication at each step.
