Introduction to products

A CNC plasma cutter is a computer-guided thermal cutting system. It uses a jet of ionized gas, called plasma, to cut through metals that conduct electricity. Imagine a CNC router, but instead of a rotating bit, it uses a very hot electric arc. This arc melts the metal and blows it away. The machine reads your computer-aided design (CAD) files, turns them into movement instructions, and precisely guides a plasma torch along those paths. Though straightforward in idea, it significantly transforms how a workshop functions.

How Does It Actually Work?

 

Plasma cutting might sound futuristic, using ionized gas and heat hotter than the sun's surface, but its basic idea is simple.

It all begins with the power source. A steady DC power supply creates the electricity to keep the arc going. The amperage you use dictates how thick of material you can cut – more amps allow for cutting through thicker metal.

Compressed gas, like air, oxygen, nitrogen, or argon blends, is pushed through a tiny copper nozzle. An electric arc then energizes this gas, transforming it into plasma. This plasma, the fourth state of matter, reaches incredibly high temperatures, from 20,000°C to 30,000°C.

The torch then directs this plasma into a focused stream. When this stream meets the workpiece (which is grounded), the electrical circuit is completed. The intense heat melts the metal where the cut is happening, and the fast-moving gas stream blows the melted metal away. It's all done with heat and gas, no physical force required.

"CNC" comes into play with motion control. The control system interprets G-code commands, and servo motors move the torch along the X and Y directions. An automatic system keeps the torch at the perfect height above the metal – if it's too close, it can crash; if it's too far, the cut won't be as clean.

The cutting table holds the metal plate you're working on. Slats keep the plate elevated over a water or downdraft system, which collects the fumes and sparks. It's a bit messy, but it's all managed.

This entire system can take a design file and turn it into a finished piece with very little help needed from an operator. You place the metal plate, load the cutting program, and the machine handles the rest.

What's the difference between plasma and flame cutting-which one should I choose?


Plasma cuts faster (up to 10x), works on all conductive metals including stainless and aluminum, and produces cleaner edges. Flame is slower, only works on carbon steel, but is more economical for thick plate over 50mm. Choose plasma for versatility and speed; choose flame if you primarily cut very thick carbon steel.

How much does it cost to run a CNC plasma cutter?


Operating costs come down to consumables (electrodes and nozzles), electricity, and compressed air. Consumables wear out-typical life is a few hours of cutting time depending on amperage and material-. We can give you a per-part estimate based on your typical work.
