Unlike less sturdy gantry systems that can bend under heavy demands, this unit features a solid, reinforced bridge spanning the cutting table. It's equipped to carry multiple cutting torches, enabling it to slice through steel up to and exceeding 200mm in thickness.

How It Works

Here's a breakdown of how it operates: A gantry, which is like a bridge, moves along heavy rails flanking the cutting table. It carries torches that traverse the width of the plate, directed by a CNC controller following pre-programmed patterns.

The gantry itself is a critical component. On robust machines, the gantry beam is fabricated from thick steel sections, boasting a wide box-beam structure with multiple reinforcing ribs-a significant upgrade from the aluminum extrusions found on lighter models. This enhanced mass effectively dampens vibrations and prevents deflection, crucial when cutting thick plates or running multiple torches concurrently.

For precise alignment, the drive system relies on intelligent, synchronized dual-drive motors, one on each side of the gantry, to keep the bridge square to the table. If one side lags or surges ahead, the resulting cuts will be misaligned. Heavy-duty machines utilize precision gear racks with minimal play, and their servo drives are powerful enough to handle the substantial weight of the gantry.

The cutting heads can be equipped for plasma, oxy-fuel, or both. Plasma is suitable for materials ranging from about 1 to 35mm, varying with power output. Oxy-fuel excels with very thick materials, handling depths of 200mm or more. Many workshops equip their machines with both: plasma for its speed on medium-thickness plates and oxy-fuel for the most demanding, thick-material jobs.

Automatic arc voltage height control ensures the torch maintains a consistent distance from the material. Even as the plate heats and expands, or if the material has a slight bow, the system automatically adjusts the torch height, ensuring uniform cut quality across the entire surface without manual intervention.

Ensure your rails and bearings are kept clean and lubricated. While the robust 24kg rails are designed for durability, it's crucial to keep them free of debris and well-oiled. Replace bearings if you hear grinding noises or detect any play in the gantry's movement.

Bellows shield the gantry's internal components from dust and dross. If they're no longer providing sufficient protection, it's time for a replacement.
