What Good Is a Laser Cleaner If You Can't Move It to the Job?

Ask anyone who's ever had to haul a sandblaster up a ladder. Or drag an industrial laser cleaner on a pallet jack through a narrow factory aisle. Or load a 400kg machine into a van by themselves. Portability isn't a luxury-it's often the difference between getting the job done and not getting it at all.

We built this portable laser cleaning machine for people who can't park their equipment in one spot and leave it there. It's a lightweight, mobile unit designed to go where the work is-up scaffolding, into ship holds, across job sites, into the back of a pickup truck. And it still delivers enough power to strip rust and paint without forcing you to haul a 400kg anchor around.

The Weight Problem That Nobody Talks About

Most "portable" laser cleaners are portable in the same way a refrigerator is portable-yes, technically you can move it, but you're going to hate every second of it. They weigh 300kg, they don't have proper handles, and they're balanced like a cinder block.

We looked at how people actually move equipment and redesigned from the ground up.

The main unit weighs about 120kg.

That's not featherweight. But it's light enough that two people can lift it into a van. One person can wheel it up a ramp. It fits through a standard doorway. The dimensions are compact-about the size of a large rolling toolbox.

The cleaning head is under 2.5kg.

The part you actually hold is light. The fiber cable and power bundle are flexible and don't fight you. After a full day of cleaning, you'll feel it in your shoulders, but you won't need physical therapy.

The chiller is separate and on wheels.

Like our welding machines, the water chiller is a separate unit. You can park it nearby and run the cleaning head up to 10 meters away. You're not dragging the whole machine around-just the lightweight cable bundle.

Real-World Users of This Portable Laser Cleaning Machine

Mobile weld prep contractor

This company does weld prep for pipeline construction. They travel to job sites with a van full of equipment. Before laser cleaning, they used angle grinders-slow, noisy, and dusty.

Now they take the portable laser cleaner to each weld location. The machine rides in the van on its casters, rolls out on a ramp, and plugs into standard 220V power. The operator walks the cleaning head along the joint, removing rust and paint in seconds. The weld goes down immediately, no contamination.

One site saved four hours of grinding time on a single pipeline joint. They're now bidding jobs they couldn't touch before.

Ship repair yard

A dry dock facility repairs fishing vessels. They needed a laser cleaner that could be moved between dry dock and quayside, up gangways, and into confined engine rooms.

The portable unit goes up the gangway on a hand truck. The chiller and main unit are separate-two people carry them up, or they use a small lift. Once on deck, the machine is plugged in and the cleaning head reaches across the work area.

They use it for:

Removing paint before welding repairs

Cleaning propeller shafts before NDT inspection

Stripping anti-fouling from small sections of hull

Prepping surfaces for new coating

Historic restoration workshop

This customer restores cast iron architectural pieces-things like decorative columns, railings, and mantels. The castings have layers of paint from different eras and a layer of rust underneath. Sandblasting would damage the fine detail. Chemical strippers are messy and hazardous.

The portable laser cleaner removes paint and rust one layer at a time, without damaging the cast iron or the decorative details. The machine is small enough to wheel between workstations, and the cleaning head reaches into intricate spaces. The workshop owner told us: "We can now quote restoration jobs we used to turn away."

What We've Learned From a Few Years of Building These

The most common issue people have with portable laser cleaners is the power supply. They plug it into a long, thin extension cord and the machine trips or runs erratically. The fix: use a proper cable-at least 2.5mm² for 220V, and keep the extension cord under 20 meters. Or better yet, plug directly into the wall.

The second most common issue: the protective window gets dirty and they don't notice. The beam output drops, cleaning slows down, and they think the machine is broken. The window is right at the front of the cleaning head-it's the first thing to get contaminated. Check it regularly, clean it with the provided wipes, and replace it when it gets scratched. Spare windows are cheap. Lost time isn't.

The third: scanning width. The 80mm standard head is a good all-around choice. The 200mm head is faster on flat surfaces but harder to use in tight spots. If you're doing a variety of jobs, you might want both. Swap them in about two minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this portable laser cleaning machine run on a standard 220V 15A household outlet, or does it need a special circuit?

+

-

It draws about 30A at full power on 220V, so a standard 15A outlet won't work. You'll need a dedicated circuit with a 32A breaker and 4mm² wiring-the same as what you'd run for a large air compressor or a welder. We can also configure the machine for 380V three-phase, which draws less current. Check your shop power before ordering, and we'll supply the appropriate cable and plug.

How long does it take to set up the machine when I move it to a new location?

+

-

About 10–15 minutes. The main unit and chiller connect with quick-disconnect water fittings and a single power cable. After moving, you'll need to let the chiller run for a few minutes to purge any air from the coolant lines. The machine won't fire until temperature stabilizes, so this happens automatically. A typical setup: roll both units into position, connect the water lines, plug in the power, power on, wait 10 minutes, and start cleaning.

Is the cleaning head interchangeable for different spot sizes, or is the 80mm head the only option?

+

-

We offer three head options: 80mm (standard, all-purpose), 100mm (good balance of speed and detail), and 200mm (best for large flat surfaces). The 80mm is the most maneuverable and works well for most users. The 200mm cleans faster but is bulkier. The heads swap out with a single connector in about two minutes. We recommend starting with the 80mm and adding the 200mm if you find yourself cleaning large flat surfaces frequently.

How do I transport the machine without damaging the optical path or the chiller?

+

-

The main unit and chiller separate at the quick-disconnect fittings-you don't transport them as one piece. Secure both units in the vehicle with straps to prevent them from moving during transport. We don't recommend laying the main unit on its side-keep it upright to prevent coolant from entering the optical path. The chiller can be transported upright or on its side, but upright is better. For long road trips, drain the coolant from the chiller to prevent sloshing and potential air lock.

Does the cleaning head need special training to use, or can anyone pick it up and start cleaning?

+

-

Anyone can pick it up and start cleaning within a few minutes. The red guide laser shows you where the beam is hitting. The trigger operates the beam. The scan pattern is a pre-set area that you move across the surface. There's no complex aiming or focus adjustment. The learning curve is mostly about speed-moving too fast leaves contamination behind; moving too slow can heat the substrate. You'll get the feel within a few test passes. We provide training resources and a quick-start guide.
