A: Surface rust, mill scale, light pitting, and corrosion on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Deep pitting where rust has penetrated below the surface won't be fully removed-laser cleaning removes surface oxide but doesn't "fill" pits. Traditional methods would still be needed there.

Q: Does it damage the base metal?
A: When set correctly, no. Laser energy is tuned to rust's absorption threshold, which is lower than the base metal's. The rust layer absorbs the energy and vaporizes before the substrate heats up significantly-6. However, running excessive power or slow scan speed can heat the substrate-so proper parameter setup is essential.
