What "Fiber" Actually Changes
Most people think "fiber" just means a different laser source. That's true, but it's not the whole story. A fiber laser changes the economics of tube cutting in ways that aren't obvious from a spec sheet.
A fiber tube laser cutter uses a solid-state laser source where the beam is generated in a doped optical fiber and delivered through a flexible fiber optic cable to the cutting head. The wavelength is about 1.06 microns-roughly one-tenth of a CO₂ laser's wavelength. That shorter wavelength is absorbed more efficiently by metals. The beam doesn't bounce off the surface. It goes in.
How We Develop and Validate Our Machines
We've been manufacturing CNC cutting equipment since 2014, starting with portable cutters, then moving to gantry machines, and eventually lasers. Here's a look at how we construct this machine:
1. Raw Material Arrival: Steel is received and thoroughly inspected for dimensions and material grade before being sent to the production floor.
2. Frame Welding: The bed features a modular, segmented design. Post-welding, the assembly undergoes stress relief heat treatment. Skipping this step can lead to bed distortion over time, impacting cut accuracy.
3. Precision Machining: Key mounting surfaces and guide rail beds are machined to exact specifications.
4. Comprehensive Assembly: Mechanical, electrical, and optical components are installed, followed by chuck alignment. The cutting head, chiller, and control cabinet are then fitted.
5. Laser Alignment: The beam path is precisely aligned, and the auto-focus cutting head is calibrated.
6. Rigorous Testing: Each machine undergoes comprehensive testing before shipment. Motion systems operate at full speed and travel. The laser is tested at its rated power. We cut actual tubes of varying diameters and thicknesses, meticulously checking edge quality and measuring dimensions. Any Fiber Tube Laser Cutter that doesn't meet our standards is not shipped.
The fiber laser source is built tough, but some components need consistent care
At the bottom of the cutting head, directly in the line of fire, are protective lenses. Spatter and dust can dirty these up. When a lens gets dirty, it absorbs laser energy and might crack. Give them a daily clean with lens paper and alcohol, and swap them out if you notice any scratches.
Nozzles control the assist gas flow. Their openings can wear down over time, becoming larger or misshapen. A worn nozzle leads to uneven gas flow, resulting in rough edges or extra dross. Luckily, nozzles are inexpensive, so keep a few spares handy.
Ceramic rings are designed to break first. If the cutting head accidentally hits the workpiece, the ceramic ring takes the impact, protecting the costly cutting head. Always have backups.
Metal dust and the constant rotation of the tube wear down chuck jaws. Worn jaws mean the tube can slip or spin unevenly. Clean them daily and replace them when their grip isn't consistent anymore.
Guide rails require routine cleaning and lubrication. Metal dust and debris from cutting act like sandpaper on them. Clean them every day and lubricate them once a week.
The most frequent problem I encounter is the quality of the assist gas. Moisture or oil in the gas lines can harm the protective lens. A refrigerated air dryer is a must-have, not an option.
About the Company
Today, the company manufactures over 20 machine models. The product line includes laser cutting machines, laser welding machines, plasma cutting equipment, and flame cutting systems. The machines are used in shipbuilding, steel fabrication, construction, mining equipment, and automotive manufacturing.
The engineering team handles installation, commissioning, and training. The showroom has multiple machine models and offers free sample cutting services.
Why does fiber cut faster on thin tubes?
The shorter wavelength of a fiber laser is absorbed more efficiently by metals. The beam stays in the cut zone instead of reflecting off the surface. This means higher power density and faster cutting speeds on thin to medium materials.
How long does the fiber laser source last?
The fiber source is rated for 100,000 hours of operation. In a shop running 8 hours a day, that's over 30 years of work. The source itself doesn't wear out in the way mechanical components do.
What's the advantage of a three-chuck system over two chucks?
A three-chuck system eliminates the cutting blind spot at the end of the tube. Material utilization reaches 98%-almost the entire tube becomes finished parts. The reduction in material waste alone can pay for the upgrade.
What materials can a fiber tube laser cutter handle?
Carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass. Stainless requires nitrogen assist gas to prevent edge oxidation. Aluminum requires slightly different parameters due to its thermal conductivity.
