What This Machine Is

The 1860 portable flame cutter is a CNC system designed for cutting thick carbon steel plates. It utilizes oxy-fuel combustion, usually with oxygen and either acetylene or propane. The '1860' signifies its cutting capacity: 1800mm (about 6 ft) wide by 6000mm (about 20 ft) long. This machine runs on standard 220V power and features a light gantry that moves on rails positioned on the workpiece or temporary supports. Unlike plasma cutters that use an electric arc, flame cutters preheat the steel to its ignition point (around 870°C) with a flame. Then, a high-pressure oxygen jet initiates an exothermic reaction with the metal, oxidizing it and expelling molten iron oxide. This process releases more heat, allowing it to cut through substantial thicknesses.
Here's what the machine can do
It slices through thick carbon steel plates, ranging from 6mm to 150mm, and with certain setups, even over 200mm. This makes it suitable for everything from structural beams and ship hulls to parts for heavy machinery.
It handles intricate designs. The CNC controller precisely follows programmed patterns-straight lines, curves, circles, and complex shapes. Simply upload a DXF or CAD file, and the software creates the cutting path for the machine to execute automatically. Plus, it has a built-in library of 54 common shapes, allowing you to generate cutting patterns by just inputting dimensions.
It cuts where you need it. Its portable nature means you can set it up right on the material or on temporary supports. The rails are placed on the plate, the gantry moves along the rails, and the controller connects to a standard 220V outlet. You can be cutting professional-grade parts on-site within an hour of setup, saving you the time and expense of moving heavy plates to a workshop.
Getting Your Portable Machine Ready
Surface Prep
Portable machines set up fast, but getting the base right is key. The rails need a flat, steady surface. If you're placing them straight onto your work, ensure the plate is well-supported so it doesn't wobble. If you're using temporary supports, level them before putting the rails down. Even a slight twist in the rails can mess with cutting accuracy over the full 6000mm length.
01
Rail Alignment
Make sure both rails are perfectly parallel and level with each other. Our wide-track design offers great stability, but proper alignment is still crucial. Don't skip this step-misaligned rails can cause the gantry to stick or wander off course.
02
Gas Hookups
You'll need oxygen and a fuel gas like acetylene or propane. Aim for about 1.5MPa for oxygen and around 0.1MPa for fuel gas. Both gases should be clean and dry. Always check all connections for leaks before you fire up the torch.
03
Power
The machine runs on standard 220V single-phase power, so a regular wall outlet will do. On a construction site, a portable generator with a steady output is perfectly fine.
04
What the 1860 Portable Flame Cutter Can Cut
The machine is designed for cutting carbon steel plate, with thicknesses typically ranging from 5mm to 150mm, though some units can handle 200mm or more. It's ideal for structural steel, pressure vessel plate, ship hulls, and heavy equipment parts. It can also cut structural shapes like beams, channels, and angles with the right setup, processing steel for construction and infrastructure. Additionally, with proper positioning, it can cut pipe and tube sections for oil and gas, pipeline, and structural uses.
However, this machine is exclusively for carbon steel. It cannot cut stainless steel, aluminum, copper, or other non-ferrous metals. For those materials, you'd need plasma or laser cutting.
FAQ

01.Can the 1860 portable flame cutter cut stainless steel or aluminum?
No. Oxy-fuel flame cutting only works on carbon steel-. The process relies on the exothermic reaction between oxygen and iron, which doesn't occur with stainless steel, aluminum, copper, or other non-ferrous metals. For these materials, you need plasma or laser cutting.
02.How do I store the machine when not in use?
Store the gantry and rails in a dry indoor area. The rails should be stored flat to prevent warping. Protect the CNC controller from dust and moisture. Drain gas lines and close cylinder valves. The rails have protective oil from the factory; reapply periodically to prevent rust. The machine's aluminum frame won't rust, but steel components need protection.
03.What if I need to cut a shape that's longer than 6 meters?
The 1860 designation refers to the standard rail length. You can extend the rail length by adding additional track sections-up to 12 meters or more with modular rail extensions. The control system supports both cutting length programming and continuous cutting mode. Contact us for extended rail options.
04.Can the machine be upgraded to plasma cutting later?
Yes, some configurations support a dual-process setup where you can switch between flame and plasma by changing the torch and power supply. However, this requires additional hardware: a plasma power source, a different torch mounting bracket, and a switchable gas line. The CNC controller supports both processes. Contact us for upgrade options and pricing.
