Mini Plasma Gantry Cutter

The Mini Plasma Gantry Cutter is a compact CNC plasma cutting system perfect for workshops with limited space and budgets. It has a gantry, which is an overhead bridge, that moves over a built-in cutting table, guiding a plasma torch along a set path. You just place a metal sheet on the table, and the machine cuts it precisely according to your CAD design, giving you identical parts every time without needing to readjust the sheet.

While full-size gantry systems can take up 10-15 square meters, this one needs only about 2-3 square meters. It can handle sheet metal sizes up to 1300×2500mm or 1500×3000mm. It's ideal for smaller fabrication shops, garages, maker spaces, and light production settings.

Our workshop currently uses a handheld plasma torch for straightforward cuts, managing straight lines and basic circles with a steady hand. The process becomes unmanageable, however, when customers ask for curved designs or identical parts in quantity, resulting in excessive grinding and parts that aren't uniform.

A full-scale CNC table would be the ultimate fix, but the investment is often prohibitive – exceeding our annual rent and requiring considerable floor space.

This is where the Mini Plasma Gantry Cutter shines. It's not designed to go head-to-head with a 3000W fiber laser on thin sheets or replace a 200A industrial plasma setup for heavy plates. Its niche is providing workshops with accurate, reproducible part cutting capabilities without the significant outlay of a large-scale machine.

Many people think the most challenging part of CNC cutting is the software or programming. That's not the case.

The real trick is ensuring the machine is perfectly square and level.

For instance, the rails must be parallel within roughly 0.2mm per meter. Any deviation causes the gantry to bind, and if the rails aren't level, your cuts will end up at an angle. Consequently, most of the assembly effort is dedicated to getting the rails just right.

I've witnessed workshops spend three hours putting the machine together and only thirty minutes on the rails, which is the wrong approach. Focus on the rails; they're the foundation for everything else.

The great news? Once it's aligned, it stays that way. The frame is sturdy enough that you won't need to check it weekly. Just be mindful not to move the machine without recalibrating.
