Regular auto-darkening welding helmets won't block this specific wavelength. You'll need special laser safety glasses rated for 1064nm, with an optical density of 5 or more.

2. Beware of Reflections:The laser beam can bounce off surfaces, particularly shiny ones like polished stainless steel, copper, or aluminum. These reflections can harm your eyes or skin, so always wear your safety glasses, even if you think you aren't looking directly at the source.

3. Ventilation is Key: Laser welding creates metal fumes, some of which can be harmful. One client learned this the hard way when an operator developed a headache after just one shift without fume extraction. We strongly suggest using a portable fume extractor placed close to where you're welding.

4.Protect Your Skin: The beam can cause severe burns. Make sure to wear long sleeves and gloves. Darker clothing is also helpful as it absorbs stray reflections.

5.Choose Your Workspace Wisely:Working in open areas is generally safer than enclosed ones. While the beam disperses quickly when welding a large item in an open shop, confined spaces or corners increase the risk of dangerous reflections.

Common Problem

Is shielding gas always necessary?

What's the optimal joint design for pulse laser welding?

 

The same as other welding methods-tight gaps, clean surfaces, good fit-up. However, pulse welding is slightly more forgiving than TIG on fit-up because you can use multiple passes or adjust the pulse parameters to fill small gaps.

Can I weld galvanized steel with this machine?

 

Galvanized steel is challenging for any welding process. The zinc coating vaporizes and can contaminate the protective window. It's possible, but you'll need to adjust the parameters and clean the window more frequently. The fumes are also hazardous-good ventilation is essential.
