How It Actually Works

Here's how the fiber laser works: It produces a beam at around 1080nm, which is about a tenth of a CO₂ laser's wavelength. This shorter wavelength is much better absorbed by metals. The beam is sent via a fiber optic cable to the cutting head, where a lens focuses it to a tiny spot, roughly 0.1mm wide. This spot instantly melts the metal it hits. An assist gas (oxygen for carbon steel, nitrogen for stainless steel and aluminum) then blows the molten metal away from the cut.

What sets this machine apart from older models is its control system. The LaserEdge or Cypcut software is user-friendly, featuring a graphical interface, ready-made shape libraries, and pre-set cutting settings for various materials and thicknesses, so you don't need to be a CNC expert to operate it. The auto-focus cutting head automatically adjusts for different material thicknesses, eliminating the need to manually tweak focus settings.

As for the gantry, it utilizes a double-drive system with finely ground rack-and-pinion gears. Two motors, one on each side, ensure the gantry stays square. It achieves positioning accuracy within ±0.3mm per meter and repeat positioning accuracy within ±0.1mm. With acceleration up to 1.5G, the machine quickly reaches its operating speed, leading to shorter cycle times for intricate parts with many small movements.
