An extended bed fiber laser cutting machine solves that problem. The bed is built to your plate size - 6 meters, 8 meters, 12 meters, or longer. The machine cuts the entire plate in one pass. No repositioning. No alignment errors. No rework.

I've watched shops fight with repositioning on standard beds for years. Each move introduces error. After four repositioning steps, the accumulated error exceeds 1mm. That's enough to make parts not fit. The grinding starts. The rework starts. The time adds up. The extended bed eliminates all of that.

The Problem with Standard Beds

Most machines are built for standard sheet sizes, typically 3,000x1,500mm, which is what most workshops handle. However, when you need to process longer plates, the usual bed size becomes a problem.

Each time you have to move the plate, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes. This involves the operator realigning it, setting a new reference point, and hoping any errors don't add up too much. For a 12-meter plate, this means three or four repositioning steps, and the total error can easily go over 1mm.

An extended bed gets rid of repositioning altogether. The plate is loaded just once and comes out completely finished. This saves time, avoids alignment mistakes, and means no need for rework.

What Extended Bed Actually Means

The machine's bed is extended to match your plate length. If your plates are 6 meters long, the bed is 6 meters. If they're 12 meters, the bed is 12 meters. If your plates are 15 meters, the bed is 15 meters. Some configurations go up to 30 meters.

The extended bed comes in modular sections - 3-meter or 4-meter modules. You configure the machine to match your plate sizes, not the other way around. The bed is stress-relieved to prevent warping. The gantry travels along the full length. Positioning accuracy stays consistent across the entire bed.

What Changes with Extended Bed

 

The workflow changes. On a standard machine, the operator loads the plate, runs a section, repositions, runs another section. The operator is busy moving material. On an extended bed machine, the operator loads the plate once and starts the program. The machine runs. The operator does other work.

The accuracy changes. On a standard machine, each reposition introduces 0.5-1mm of error. After four steps, the total error exceeds 1mm. On an extended bed machine, the plate stays in one position. The error is consistent across the full length.

The time changes. A 12-meter plate takes 47 minutes on a standard machine - 32 minutes of cutting and 15 minutes of repositioning. The same plate takes 32 minutes on an extended bed machine. That's 15 minutes saved per plate. Over 20 plates, that's 5 hours.

What's the longest bed length available?

Configurations go up to 30 meters or more, depending on the machine design. Some machines use a segmented bed design with a base length of 10 meters, expandable in 4-meter increments up to a maximum of 40 meters.

Can an extended bed machine cut smaller plates?

Yes. The machine cuts any plate that fits on the bed. You don't need to fill the full bed length. Smaller plates are processed the same way as on a standard machine.

How does the machine stay accurate over 20 meters?

The bed is built in modular sections. Each section is independent and stress-relieved. Thermal expansion doesn't transfer between sections. The gantry uses bilateral drive to stay square.

Can I upgrade my standard machine to an extended bed?

Some machines are designed with modular beds that allow expansion. You can start with a shorter bed and add sections as your production grows. Other machines require a full replacement.
